Gateways to the Valley: Lachen & Lachung
Your journey to Yumthang Valley is part of a larger adventure in North Sikkim, which is typically based out of the two main villages: Lachung and Lachen.
- Lachung (The "Small Pass"): This is the primary gateway to Yumthang Valley. A picturesque village at 8,600 ft, Lachung is where travelers spend the night before making the early morning trip to Yumthang and Zero Point. It's known for its monastery, waterfalls, and apple orchards.
- Lachen (The "Big Pass"): While Lachung is the base for Yumthang, Lachen (at 8,800 ft) is the base for exploring the equally stunning, high-altitude Gurudongmar Lake and Chopta Valley. Many tour packages combine both Lachen and Lachung for a comprehensive North Sikkim experience.
